Lookout for ATM & Debit Card Fraud | Horizon Bank

Fraudsters may tamper with ATMs to steal your debit-card data and PIN - commonly called “skimming.” These devices capture your information so criminals can clone cards or drain your account. Here’s how to spot and stop them.

How ATM skimmers work

Also known as ATM skimmers, these small devices fit over an ATM’s existing card reader. The device can gather your credit or debit card information when you place your card into the ATM. In combination with a hidden camera or a fake keypad laid over the existing one, thieves can also collect your PIN, allowing them to either create and use cloned cards or to hack your bank account directly.

How to be vigilant at the ATM

Whenever you use an ATM, keep an eye out for anything unusual. These things can all be potential signs of a skimmer or fraud:

• Inspect the machine for a loose, discolored card slot or an oddly thick, wobbly keypad
• Cover the keypad with your hand or body when entering your PIN to block hidden cameras
• Hold on to your ATM and purchase receipts - compare them to your account statement afterward
• Never share your PIN with anyone - online, on the phone, or in person
• Check your balances and recent transactions right after you use an ATM and report anything suspicious immediately

Be especially vigilant on weekends. Thieves often install skimmers for weekend use, when it’s harder for you to report fraudulent activity on your account.
